Boxing Sa Plaza & Perigrinasyon sa Mag Agahon!

             A boxing tournament on the last weekend of August capped the month-long festivities held to celebrate the feast days of the patron saints of Tiwi’s two parishes. The tournament consisted of five amateur inter-barangay bouts, sixteen inter-town bouts and two professional six-round contests. Prices were awarded to both winners and losers. A total of nine towns and cities from Albay, Camarines Sur and Sorsogon sent their delegations in the well-participated tournament.

             The affair coincided with a religious activity traditionally held on the last Saturday of the month of August called the “perigrinasyon sa mag-agahon,” which literally means a journey on the wee hours. A midnight mass was celebrated at the St. Lawrence the Martyr Parish church, and after hearing mass, the devotees joined a procession to Joroan, a village some nine kilometers away, to hear another early morning mass at the Shrine of Our Lady of Salvation, the Patroness of the Diocese of Legazpi and the Province of Albay.

             Thousands of devotees and pilgrims from all over the Bicol Region and beyond came to participate in the religious ceremonies. As they arrived early Friday evening, they had a chance to watch the boxing tournament where some of the pugilists also are from their own towns.
