Coron Festival 2009 Update

Gawad Coron, a search for Tiwinhon achievers is launched

Mayor Jaime Villanueva, Tiwi town mayor, announced the formal launching of the Gawad Coron, a local government program to search for and honor outstanding Tiwinhons, during the Coronation Night ceremony of the Mutya ng Coron 2009. The local government program aims to give recognition to persons from the town who have made notable accomplishments in their careers and whose work has contributed to development in the municipality. The selected recipients of the Gawad Coron will be honored in a ceremony and presented with awards next year.

Mayor Villanueva laid out the qualifications for candidates and the process for nominating individuals to ten award categories. There will be an award for each of the fields of agriculture, education, arts and culture, industry, small and medium business, public service and community service. The Mayor added that the municipal government will also present an Outstanding Tiwinhon Abroad award for one chosen for admirable deeds in his adopted country that have  contributed to the  betterment to the  overseas community of fellow Tiwinhons there, or for his effort and contribution to the improvement of the quality of people’s lives  here at home. A Bayaning Tiwinhon award tops the honors of the Gawad Coron and this will be for a resident of the town who, without regard for his own safety or circumstance, has selflessly and courageously committed acts that have saved lives or property

Launching of the TUMANA Permaculture Farm

Tiwi, Albay. In the coming months a unique farm demonstrating novel but natural principles and strategies will be set up in a ten-hectare area on the campus grounds of Tiwi Agro-Industrial School (TAIS) in Bagumbayan, Tiwi, Albay. The launching ceremony for this special project was held at the school last August 3, 2009 in a simple program attended by dignitaries from provincial offices, representatives of key stakeholders, officials of the school, the local government, and other agencies.

The farm is to be called the TUMANA Permaculture Farm. TUMANA is an acronym for Tiwi Upland Management Areas for Nature-based Agriculture, while permaculture is the intensive design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which possess the diversity, stability and adaptability of natural ecosystems. This unique method will be the guiding framework in the development of integrated natural farming systems and long-term development strategies.  In this innovative approach to agriculture, every component is integral to the whole farm operation; every aspect contributes to and is a part of other farm activities. The farming zones and livelihood technologies to be established are designed to utilize available resources sustainably over the long term and to improve the potential of each field and system over the repeated cycles of production through nature’s regeneration methods.
